The US Justice Department have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map championed by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in response to a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
The legal battle represents the most significant counterpunch by Democrats in the ongoing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Democrats need to flip just a handful of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a unified Republican Congress will persist in implementing its political program or face resistance, investigations and possible additional obstacles.
